Graphic Designer Job Description

The job duties of a graphic designer vary depending upon their place of employment and specialization. In general, graphic designers create various types of art for display. Most of the art is created through the use of computerized design programs. Art is then used for magazines, newspapers, advertising publications, marketing and promotional materials, signs, web pages, and much more.

Where a graphic artist’s designs will appear depends upon their specialization. The field of graphic design involves many different skills and areas of expertise. Some graphic designers specialize in specific areas of design, while others work in many different areas and medias.

Besides specializations, there are also many different careers that are encompassed within the graphic design field, including advertising, web design, product design, and game design.

Graphic designers are usually employed at advertising, design, and publishing firms. Many designers are also employed at management, scientific, and technical consulting firms. Approximately three out of ten graphic designers are self-employed, either freelancing full-time or part-time. Designers who are self-employed often work from a home office or studio.

Regardless of where a graphic designer works, they are required to have specific skills. In addition to being familiar with computer and design programs, graphic designers must also be very creative and innovative. They are increasingly becoming responsible for not only creating artwork, but for creating and controlling the context of the message or brand that their art represents. It is important that graphic designers are able to consistently come up with new ways to express their ideas and please clients.

Graphic Designer School & Training

Although formal training is not always required for graphic designers, it will be much easier to break into the field if graduation from a graphic design school is achieved. There are many different graphic design schools that are available to aspiring graphic designers.

Many graphic designers that are currently in the field have achieved an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree from a graphic design school. Graphic artists can also continue their education and achieve a master’s degree in art or design.

The curriculum at most graphic design schools includes the basic principles of design and computerized design, commercial graphics production, printing techniques, and website design. In addition to those skills, some graphic design school programs also offer additional training that encompasses marketing techniques, business practices, and communication skills.

Admission requirements for graphic design schools will vary depending upon the school and the program. Advanced programs may require that applicants prove that they have some type of artistic ability before they will be admitted, while other entry-level programs require only a high school diploma or less.

A graphic design school education will not only provide training, but it will also be a benefit to graphic designers when they enter the workforce. A good portfolio, which can be gained during a graphic design education, will often help a designer gain employment.

Graphic Designer Salary

The job outlook for graphic designers is very good. Employment opportunities are expected to grow faster in the graphic design field than in the average occupation. Experts predict a 20 to 35 percent increase in employment opportunities.
