In order to obtain a position as a veterinary technician, formal training and education is required.  Most people who choose a career in this field opt for a 2-year program that awards an associates degree upon completion.  Those seeking an advanced position or a career as a technologist choose a 4-year degree to acquire a bachelor’s degree.  The majority of veterinary technicians graduate from an accredited program that includes instruction in classroom, clinical and laboratory settings.  In these particular settings, education with the use of live animals is a requirement.

It is important to be proficient in high school science, biology and mathematics.  Veterinary technicians may also seek higher learning in these courses through instruction in the certification program.  It is also necessary for technicians to have good communication skills based on the fact that contact with the animal’s owner is critical.  It is also extremely important to take accurate records and accounts of a particular animals health in order to establish the best health care possible.
